It is 3pm on a Saturday in a west-facing condo. The sun is pouring across the living room, the sofa fabric is fading, and the air-con is working twice as hard. You could get up and tug every cord. Or the blinds could already have come down on their own, an hour ago, because they know where the sun is.
That is the short answer to what smart blinds do: they are motorised blinds you can control from a wall switch, a remote, your phone or a schedule, and they can move by themselves when the time or the light is right. This guide covers the main options for Singapore homes, what affects the cost, and the questions to ask before you buy.
What makes a blind “smart”?
A smart blind has three parts: a quiet motor in the headrail or roller tube, a way to power it (mains wiring or batteries), and a control system that tells it when to move. The fabric itself is the same kind you would choose for a manual blind: sheer, dim-out or blackout.
The “smart” part is the control. A basic motorised blind runs on a remote. A smart one joins the rest of your home, so one tap on a wall panel can close the blinds, dim the lights and start the air-con together.
The main options for Singapore homes
1. Wired motorised blinds
The motor is powered from a 230V point near the window, usually run during renovation. Wired systems suit new condos, landed homes and full renovations where the electrician can plan a point at each window. You never change a battery, and the blinds can be tied into a KNX system or a central controller. Lutron’s Sivoia range offers a wired option (QS) alongside wireless control, and Lutron describes it as built to move almost silently.
2. Battery-powered (wire-free) blinds
These suit homes that are already finished, including many HDB flats and rented units, because nothing needs to be chased into the wall. Lutron’s Triathlon shades run on standard D-cell batteries, which Lutron rates at three to five years of normal use, and come as roller, Roman, honeycomb and wood blind styles. See our Triathlon shades page for the range we supply.
3. Smart motors added to a wider system
If you are choosing a whole-home system, the blinds can come from the same family as your switches. Akubela, for example, makes curtain motors that work with its HyPanel touch screens and the BelaHome app, so one screen runs lights, curtains and air-con. Read more in our Akubela Singapore guide.
Quick comparison
| Option | Best for | Needs rewiring? | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired motorised | New condos, landed homes, full renovations | Yes, a 230V point near each window | No batteries; easiest to link to KNX and whole-home scenes |
| Battery (wire-free) | Finished homes, HDB, rental units | No | Batteries to change every few years; quick to install |
| Part of a smart home system | Owners planning lights, curtains and air-con together | Depends on the system (Zigbee or KNX) | One app and one wall panel for everything |
Smart blinds through the day
- Morning: the bedroom blinds rise slowly at 7am, so you wake to daylight instead of an alarm.
- Midday: west-facing blinds come down before the afternoon sun hits the room, which helps keep it cooler. Lutron’s systems can track the sun’s position for your location to do this automatically.
- Leaving home: one “Away” button closes the blinds, switches off the lights and turns off the air-con.
- Movie night: tap “Movie” and the blackout blinds close as the lights dim.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices because every window is different, but these are the things that move the number:
- Number and size of windows. A single living room window and a whole landed home are very different jobs.
- Power. Wired motors need an electrician’s point at each window; battery motors skip that work.
- Fabric. Sheer, dim-out, blackout, Roman or honeycomb styles all differ.
- Control. A remote only, or full integration with wall panels, KNX and scenes.
- Brand range. Our Signature range (such as Lutron) and Value range (such as Akubela) suit different budgets.

Before you buy: a checklist
- Is there a power point near each window, or will you need battery motors?
- Is your renovation still open? If yes, plan the wiring now; it is far harder later.
- Which rooms need blackout fabric (bedrooms, media room) and which need sheer (living room)?
- Do you want blinds to work with your lights and air-con, or on their own?
- Will you use a wall switch, a remote, the app or voice? Most families want at least two.
- Who services it? Ask whether the installer also programmes the system and comes back if something needs adjusting.
- Can you see and hear it working first? Motor noise and speed are easier to judge in person.
Myth vs fact
Myth: “Motorised blinds are only for landed homes.”
Fact: Battery-powered motors need no rewiring, so they work in HDB flats and finished condos too.
Myth: “The batteries will need changing all the time.”
Fact: Lutron rates its Triathlon batteries at three to five years with normal use.
Myth: “Motors are noisy.”
Fact: Quality motors are designed to run very quietly. The best way to judge is to listen to one in person.

FAQ
Can I install smart blinds in an HDB flat?
Yes. Battery-powered motors need no new wiring, so they suit HDB flats and homes that have already been renovated.
Do smart blinds work during a power cut?
Battery-powered blinds keep working because they do not rely on mains power. Wired blinds stop until power returns.
Can smart blinds work with my existing smart home?
Often, yes. It depends on the system. We work with KNX, Zigbee, Lutron and Control4, so tell us what you have and we will check.
What is the difference between smart blinds and smart curtains?
Blinds roll or fold within the window frame; curtains (drapery) slide along a track. Both can be motorised and controlled the same way.
